To thrive as a barrister in today's competitive and evolving legal environment, top-tier training is essential. Northumbria University's Bar Course LLM equips you with the vital knowledge and hands-on skills needed for contemporary legal practice. The program mirrors real-world professional scenarios more accurately than ever, covering: Civil Litigation (including evidence and Alternative Dispute Resolution), Criminal Litigation (incorporating evidence and sentencing), along with Advocacy, Conferencing, Drafting, Opinion Writing, Legal Research, and Professional Ethics. This LLM program allows you to apply your learning across diverse case types centered on core practice areas like family, civil, and criminal law—preparing you for pupillage and early career challenges. Through simulated cases, you'll refine your Advocacy, Conferencing, Drafting, and Opinion Writing abilities, gaining practical expertise that ensures immediate readiness for pupillage. The added LLM qualification elevates your professional standing with an internationally recognized credential. Northumbria provides two pathways: a conventional 10,000-15,000 word dissertation exploring a legal topic of your choice, or the SLO Bar Project—combining clinical experience from the Student Law Office with an 8,000-10,000 word written component.

Upon graduating from the Bar Course LLM, you'll be fully equipped for legal practice and eligible for call to the Bar of England and Wales (pending Inn of Court requirements). Northumbria prepares you holistically for pupillage applications and barrister life, building on your legal foundation while developing the competencies outlined in the Professional Statement for Barristers. The optional LLM further enhances your credentials with global recognition. As a leader in barrister training, Northumbria Law School enjoys strong ties with the regional legal community—local firms frequently sponsor awards honoring student achievements, reflecting the high regard for our alumni. Graduates have secured barrister roles in Newcastle, across England and Wales, and in Commonwealth jurisdictions worldwide.
