Our Master of Fine Arts (MFA) program allows you to investigate and refine modern and contemporary writing techniques while developing your own book-length manuscript or screenplay.
MFA candidates complete all components of our MA Creative Writing curriculum (including workshops, reading modules, elective courses, and a dissertation), plus an additional unit focusing on publishing and the arts industry, culminating in a finished manuscript—be it a novel, poetry collection, children's book, script, or creative nonfiction work.
You'll connect with industry experts like literary agents, publishers, and arts professionals, benefiting from our School's extensive network with leading cultural institutions. Our MFA stands out by providing sustained mentorship from accomplished writers, guiding students toward completing publishable manuscripts.
Choose your specialization from: Novel (including Short Fiction), Poetry, Writing for Children & Young Adults, Scriptwriting (stage/screen/radio), or Creative Nonfiction.
The program offers flexible study options—complete in two years full-time or three years part-time. Campus-based study (full/part-time) is available for Novel and Poetry, while online (part-time only) options exist for Children's Writing and Creative Nonfiction. Scriptwriting is campus-only. September and January intakes are offered annually.
Holders of an existing MA in Creative Writing (180 credits) from Manchester Met or other institutions can upgrade to an MFA by completing 120 additional credits, including the Manuscript unit.
