Mastering contemporary languages can provide you with a significant advantage in today's international employment landscape. Both private companies and government organizations actively seek individuals with exceptional linguistic abilities who can thrive in multicultural settings.

Over 75 million people worldwide speak French as their first language. Recognized as an official language in Canada, Belgium, and Switzerland, French is also widely used throughout Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia in North Africa, and holds status as one of the United Nations' six official languages. This program immerses you in practical language use within our diverse academic community, which includes scholars from across the globe, domestic and international students, and native-speaking language assistants. Our comprehensive interpreting and translation curriculum equips you with the capabilities to navigate and contribute to our interconnected world.
Our faculty members are distinguished experts, many with international reputations in their specialties. Drawing from rich professional backgrounds in various sectors, our language specialists bring interdisciplinary knowledge in areas including professional interpretation, translation, language instruction, and international consulting. Maintaining strong connections at local, national, and global levels, our department is consistently acknowledged for pioneering approaches, such as the internationally acclaimed FLAME initiative that combines film, language, and media in educational contexts.
French studies majors complete a mandatory year abroad in France. This cultural immersion experience proves transformative for our students, who return with expanded social networks, fresh perspectives from their travels, and enhanced self-assurance.
