Civil engineers address some of society's most pressing issues today. They create and construct buildings and infrastructure for a rapidly urbanizing world population, while responding to environmental changes and the urgent need to reduce carbon emissions.
Our MSc in Civil Engineering equips students with sophisticated numerical, analytical, design, and management capabilities to solve practical engineering challenges. These abilities, along with specialized technical knowledge and analytical skills, prepare graduates for careers in civil engineering, professional engineering certification, or diverse alternative paths including advanced academic research.
After completing the program, graduates typically join teams working on diverse infrastructure projects and architectural structures, ranging from transportation networks to landmark buildings and sports facilities. The program's distinctive interdisciplinary approach enables students to explore roles across various construction-related fields. Industry leaders enhance the curriculum through guest lectures and by presenting real-world engineering challenges.
The School of Architecture, Building and Civil Engineering holds recognition as one of only four Royal Academy of Engineering Centres of Excellence in Sustainable Building Design and receives substantial research funding from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). Through partnerships like the Building and Industrial Services Pipework Academy (BISPA) with Tata Steel and CIBSE, the School offers comprehensive civil engineering education that prepares graduates to meet the industry's evolving needs.
A recent £6 million investment has expanded our facilities, adding specialized study spaces and advanced computing resources. Students enjoy access to exceptional amenities, including our extensive 3,000m2 laboratory and one of the UK's most powerful high-performance computing systems.
