Pursuing a PhD in Science Studies means becoming part of a vibrant international and interdisciplinary research network alongside doctoral candidates specializing in Sociology, Gender Studies, Media and Cultural Studies, and Applied Social Science. Our program provides expert guidance for research projects spanning diverse fields such as the cultural representations and material applications of science and technology, policy evaluation, environmental studies, healthcare research, and digital communication systems.
Each candidate will be paired with PhD supervisors (typically two), carefully selected to align with your research focus based on their current scholarly expertise. We maintain strong collaborative ties with other Lancaster University departments, enabling potential cross-disciplinary supervision arrangements.
The Sociology Department offers a comprehensive year-round program of specialized skills training and dissertation workshops for postgraduate researchers. While you may audit relevant MA-level courses, there's no mandatory coursework component for your doctoral degree requirements.
