This program is designed for individuals seeking to critically, practically, and innovatively address global and local environmental challenges by cultivating specialized research skills at the intersection of environmental and societal studies.
Our faculty investigates diverse socio-environmental topics, including the consequences of declaring the Anthropocene as a new geological epoch, conflicts surrounding urban development projects in the Global South, and the socio-cultural transformations driven by climate change and interactions beyond human societies. This research frequently incorporates theoretical frameworks from Science and Technology Studies, mobility research, and practice theories.
You'll become part of a global, interdisciplinary network of PhD candidates specializing in Sociology, Gender Studies, Science Studies, Media and Cultural Studies, and Applied Social Science. You'll be paired with one or two supervisors whose active research aligns with your chosen topic. The department maintains strong collaborations with other Lancaster University departments, sometimes leading to cross-departmental supervision arrangements.
PhD candidates in this program benefit from strong connections with Lancaster's Centre for Mobilities Research, Lancaster Environment Centre, Centre for Practice Theory, and Centre for Science Studies.
