Our research community is vibrant across multiple disciplines including child welfare, welfare theories, gender and sexuality studies, family support systems, legal aspects of social work, community care, and healthcare integration. Current research increasingly focuses on equality, justice systems, economic disadvantage, and societal marginalization.
You'll become part of a global, multidisciplinary network of PhD candidates specializing in Sociology, Gender Studies, Science Studies, Media/Cultural Studies, and Applied Social Sciences. Each student receives supervision from typically two advisors, carefully matched to align with your research focus and their active expertise. Collaborative opportunities exist with other Lancaster departments, sometimes featuring joint supervision arrangements.
The Sociology Department offers a year-round schedule of specialized skills workshops and dissertation support sessions for postgraduate researchers.
While you may audit relevant MA courses, these are optional and don't contribute credit requirements toward your doctoral degree.
