The School of Social Sciences fosters a dynamic, interdisciplinary research environment, providing specialized supervision across diverse research areas. Our PhD program emphasizes rigorous research training to produce theoretically grounded work that contributes to both academic discourse and policy discussions. Students can choose from several study formats: full-time PhD (3-4 years), part-time PhD (5-7 years), full-time MPhil (1-2 years), or part-time MPhil (2-3 years). The School's research expertise spans several key themes, while also supporting interdisciplinary projects. We particularly welcome applications focusing on: Science, technology and risk; Crime, security and justice; Education policy; Healthcare and social services; Inequality, employment and future work trends; and Community, location and governance. Doctoral candidates become part of an intellectually stimulating community, receiving guidance from distinguished scholars in their disciplines. Our approach combines theoretical depth with practical policy relevance, offering postgraduate research opportunities in sociology, social policy, criminology, science and technology studies, social work, and education (complete list available below). We actively support interdisciplinary research initiatives and maintain collaborative partnerships with leading global institutions, international organizations, as well as regional policymakers and practitioners.
