Lancaster University offers a Theatre and Creative Writing degree program delivered through a partnership between the Lancaster Institute for the Contemporary Arts (LICA) and the English and Creative Writing Department. This unique program blends theatrical studies with the craft of composing original fiction, poetry, or dramatic works, with each discipline enhancing the other.
The Theatre component at Lancaster exposes students to groundbreaking 20th and 21st century performance arts through diverse practical and theoretical methods. Instruction comes from globally recognized, award-winning theatre professionals and academics, equipping students with valuable creative and analytical abilities applicable to theatrical careers and beyond.
Creative Writing instruction is provided by published authors through lectures, literary readings, practical exercises, and workshop discussions. The curriculum begins with an introductory Creative Writing course in the first year, followed by specialized options in subsequent years including Short Story Composition, Poetic Craft, or Nonfiction Writing.
