Lancaster's combined Spanish Studies and History program is delivered through a collaboration between the Department of Languages and Cultures and the Department of History. This four-year course features an International Placement Year during the third academic year.
The Spanish Studies component enables students to develop advanced linguistic proficiency while exploring the historical, cultural, social, and political contexts of Spanish-speaking nations worldwide. The History portion enhances analytical skills through modules covering British, European, and American historical perspectives.
The first year curriculum includes foundational studies of Spanish language and its cultural manifestations across different regions, alongside core History coursework. Students may supplement these with additional history electives or choose a minor subject from other departments, including alternative language options.
Second-year studies advance language competency while deepening understanding of Hispanic world cultures, politics, and history. Students select from internationally-focused modules that encourage comparative analysis of European and global contexts, complementing the essential language component.
