Lancaster University offers a combined Fine Art and Creative Writing degree, delivered through a partnership between the Lancaster Institute for the Contemporary Arts (LICA) and the English and Creative Writing Department. This program is designed for academically strong students with creative talents who wish to pursue both artistic practice and literary studies.
The Creative Writing component features instruction from published authors, blending lectures, readings, practical exercises, and workshop discussions. First-year students take an Introduction to Creative Writing course, followed by specialized modules in later years covering areas like Poetry Writing, Short Fiction, and Creative Non-fiction.
The Fine Art curriculum allows students to combine practical art-making with theoretical studies throughout their degree. From foundation to advanced levels, students cultivate technical abilities across diverse media including painting, sculpture, drawing, and digital art. The program focuses on developing authentic artistic practice and conceptual thinking rather than commercial illustration. Taught by practicing artists and published art historians, the course helps students establish their unique artistic voice while gaining valuable academic and creative skills that appeal to both employers and graduate programs.
