Lancaster's Film and Philosophy program is a collaborative effort between the Lancaster Institute for the Contemporary Arts and the Department of Politics, Philosophy and Religion.
This interdisciplinary degree equips students with knowledge and theoretical tools to analyze films as significant cultural objects. You'll explore cinema's artistic value within our visually-driven media landscape while examining relationships between film, contemporary art, theater, and music. While academically focused, the program offers hands-on experience with digital filmmaking using university equipment at every stage of your studies.
Students can choose from diverse elective modules in both fields alongside core requirements, starting with foundational first-year courses: Introduction to Film and Introduction to Philosophy. The curriculum progresses to Global Cinema in the second year and culminates with a Film Dissertation in the final year.
The introductory philosophy module covers essential philosophical concepts across multiple traditions—Continental, Analytic, and non-Western—providing both a survey of philosophical sub-disciplines and training in critical thinking about fundamental human questions. Designed as preparation for advanced study, it also serves as a standalone introduction to philosophical traditions. Advanced years offer specialized philosophy options such as Continental Philosophy, Logic and Language, Aesthetics, and Moral Philosophy.
