Lancaster's interdisciplinary Film and Philosophy program is co-taught by faculty from the Lancaster Institute for the Contemporary Arts and the Department of Politics, Philosophy and Religion.
This degree equips students with knowledge and theoretical approaches to analyze films as significant cultural objects. You'll explore cinema's artistic value within our increasingly visual media landscape while examining relationships between modern art, theater, music, and film. While academically focused, the program offers hands-on experience with digital filmmaking using university equipment at every stage of your studies.
Students can choose from diverse elective modules in both fields alongside core requirements, starting with foundational first-year courses: Introduction to Film and Introduction to Philosophy. Second-year studies feature Global Cinema, culminating in a Film Dissertation during the final year.
The introductory philosophy module presents essential philosophical concepts, incorporating multiple traditions - Continental, Analytic, and non-Western perspectives. It provides both a survey of philosophical sub-disciplines and develops critical thinking skills for examining fundamental human questions. While preparing students for advanced philosophy study, the course also serves as a standalone introduction for those seeking philosophical literacy across different traditions. Upper years offer specialized philosophy electives such as Continental Philosophy, Logic and Language, and Moral Philosophy.
