At Lancaster, literary studies provide a profound exploration of exceptional works spanning from medieval times to contemporary literature. You'll examine both canonical authors and underrepresented voices while discovering diverse literary formats - from ancient myths and Puritan sermons to slave narratives, modernist poetry, and graphic novels.
The power of reading
Our literary studies are built on the principle that reading transforms both texts and readers, leaving neither unchanged. Alongside traditional scholarly approaches like archival research, historicism, textual analysis, and theory, we champion innovative forms of literary criticism.
Studying with us offers not just deep literary immersion but also insight into literature's intersections with politics, ecology, philosophy, psychology, theology, film, fashion, and more. In your first year, you may explore one or two subjects beyond English Literature from our extensive module selection. This interdisciplinary approach can continue through your second and final years if desired.
