This bachelor's degree program offers an interdisciplinary approach combining literature and legal studies. Students will cultivate critical thinking, reflection, creativity, and analytical abilities that bridge both fields. The BA in Literature with Law delivers comprehensive education in these complementary disciplines, fostering essential skills for textual and legal analysis. The program encourages examination of law's role in society and its connections to literary works, recognizing that legal cases often unfold through documents, narratives, and storytelling.
Our curriculum investigates these narrative structures by studying literary forms and storytelling methods. Legal perspectives can enrich the interpretation of novels dealing with property inheritance, criminal acts, justice systems, and punitive measures. We'll examine how statutory frameworks and legal principles can inform fresh interpretations of literary works.
The program addresses fundamental themes from both disciplines, including fictional portrayals of criminality, justice systems, ethical dilemmas, incarceration experiences, and writings about conflict and displacement.
Key components include the collaborative Law and Literature module and an extended Independent Research project where students choose their own legal-literary topic with faculty guidance.
Essex University excels in commercial law, constitutional law, and human rights law. We rank 3rd nationally for legal research impact (THE research power measure, REF2021) and hold 47th position globally for Law in THE World University Rankings by Subject 2023.
