At Lancaster, literary studies provide a profound exploration of exceptional works spanning from medieval times to contemporary literature. You'll encounter both canonical authors and underrepresented voices while discovering diverse literary forms - from ancient myths and Puritan sermons to slave narratives, modernist epigrams, and modern graphic novels.
The power of reading
Our literary studies are built on the principle that reading transforms both texts and readers, leaving neither unchanged. Alongside traditional scholarly approaches like archival research, historicism, textual analysis, and literary theory, we champion innovative forms of literary criticism.
Studying with us offers not just intensive literary engagement but also insight into literature's intersections with diverse fields - politics, ecology, philosophy, psychology, theology, film, fashion, and more. In your first year, you may explore one or two subjects beyond English Literature from our extensive module selection. This interdisciplinary approach can continue through your second and final years if desired.
