At Lancaster University, Creative Writing students pair their writing pursuits with another academic discipline. Your Creative Writing education will include lectures, readings, practical exercises, and regular workshop discussions led by experienced writers. As an English Language and Creative Writing student, you'll become part of a vibrant community, participating in the Writing Society, poetry evenings, and urban spoken word performances. This program helps refine your writing abilities while deepening your understanding of word usage and contextual meaning.
Our Linguistics and English Language department ranks among the UK's most extensive. You might explore sound structures or investigate the subtle variations and stylistic levels of English. These dual academic emphases create an ideal, mutually enhancing learning experience.
First-year studies include foundational courses in English Language and Creative Writing fundamentals. You'll compile a year-long writing portfolio contributing to your final grade, while participating in small-group peer review sessions. Second-year coursework advances to Stylistics and Intermediate Creative Writing Workshop, with optional modules including Discourse Analysis, Creative Non-Fiction techniques, and English Phonetics. Additionally, we provide specialized lectures on professional writing careers.
