At Lancaster University, Creative Writing students pair their writing studies with another academic discipline. The program delivers Creative Writing instruction through lectures, readings, practical exercises, and regular tutor-led workshops conducted by active writers. As an English Language and Creative Writing student, you'll become part of a vibrant community, with opportunities to participate in the Writing Society, poetry evenings, and urban spoken word performances. You'll refine your writing abilities, developing a keen sensitivity to language and its contextual significance.
Our Linguistics and English Language department ranks among the UK's most extensive. Your studies may involve examining sound systems or exploring English language tones, subtleties, and stylistic variations. These dual academic emphases create an ideal, mutually enhancing learning experience.
First-year studies include core modules in English Language and Introduction to Creative Writing. You'll compile a writing portfolio throughout the year that contributes to your final grade, while participating in small-group workshops for constructive peer feedback. Second-year coursework advances to Stylistics and Intermediate Creative Writing Workshop, with optional modules including Discourse Analysis, Creative Non-Fiction: Genre and Practice, and English Phonetics. The program additionally features professional development lectures on the writing industry.
