Lancaster's combined Chinese Studies and Film program is offered through the Department of Languages and Cultures alongside the Lancaster Institute for the Contemporary Arts (LICA). The Chinese Studies curriculum helps students develop advanced Chinese language proficiency while exploring China's historical, cultural, social, and political landscape within a global framework. Students can begin Chinese studies at either introductory or advanced levels. The Film component explores cinema's artistic, societal, and political impact within our increasingly visual and media-driven world, following its evolution from a late 19th-century technological innovation to one of the most powerful art forms of the 20th and early 21st centuries. The program covers film history, the cultural relevance of cinema, and provides in-depth knowledge of film production techniques. In addition to studying film theory and history, students get hands-on experience creating digital films throughout all three years of the course—either independently or collaboratively—with access to top-tier technical facilities and expert support. The first year introduces both Chinese language and culture alongside foundational Film Studies, complemented by an optional minor subject chosen from available offerings.
