The PhD Programme in Sciences and Engineering emphasizes conducting innovative research and advancing knowledge at the intersection of scientific and engineering disciplines through a transdisciplinary approach. The curriculum encompasses: • All engineering fields • Technology and Engineering Management • Computer and Information Sciences • Environmental and Materials ScienceProgram HighlightsThe Engineering Department currently has approximately 50 research faculty members, specializing in diverse areas such as communication & information engineering; design & mechatronics; materials, manufacturing & systems; signals & control; computational engineering; and data-centric engineering.The Informatics Department boasts over 70 research-active academics, covering specialties like software engineering, systems architecture, programming languages, AI, machine learning, data science, computational finance, cybersecurity, quantum computing, human-computer interaction, design ethics, and computer science education.Both departments maintain dynamic PhD programs that enable students to participate in various educational and research initiatives, from professional development workshops to specialized seminars and study groups. PhD candidates are integrated into departmental research groups, actively contributing to their projects and activities.Students also benefit from the newly established NMES Graduate School, which enhances postgraduate training, strengthens the research community, and cultivates academic belonging. The Graduate School oversees critical aspects of postgraduate research, including the NMES training curriculum, while offering enhanced support structures for both departments and students.Collaborations: The departments maintain extensive partnerships with industry and academia, with many PhD projects linked to these collaborations.This program features joint supervision by faculty from both institutions, ideally representing complementary academic disciplines.

Qualification Requirements

Bachelors degree with 2:1 honours degree in an Engineering discipline or a closely related subject such as Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry or Computer Science and a good background in the area of intended research. A 2:2 degree may be considered only where applicants also offer a Masters degree with Merit or above. IELTS (Academic): 7.0 overall with a minimum of 6.5 in each skill. TOEFL iBT: 100 overall with a minimum of 25 in writing and 23  in each of the other skills.
