Program OverviewThis program welcomes applicants exploring diverse social science research topics centered on contemporary and recent historical developments in Russia and Eurasia. The region offers numerous intriguing empirical and theoretical challenges arising from economic, social, and political transformations, historical policy responses, and the complexities of integration within a changing global context. Addressing these challenges requires deep regional expertise alongside methodological approaches that transcend geographical, cultural, and disciplinary divides. The program particularly encourages students who question established empirical, theoretical, and methodological frameworks.The Russia Institute's faculty and affiliated scholars bring interdisciplinary perspectives from political science, political economy, sociology, political sociology, international relations, as well as law and history.Program DetailsThe PhD in Russian & Eurasian Studies fosters advanced research at King's focused on Russia and Eurasia, emphasizing social sciences and contemporary humanities. This distinctive program enables interdisciplinary study of the region alongside fellow researchers employing diverse methodologies and examining parallel questions in other national contexts.
Beyond the Institute's Russia specialists, the program leverages King's broader academic community, including scholars from War Studies, Political Economy, European & International Studies, History, Theology & Religious Studies, Management, and The Dickson Poon School of Law who can supervise Russia and Eurasia-related research.Research students in Russian & Eurasian Studies will join King's vibrant research environment, a leading research university with substantial doctoral cohorts in social science, public policy, arts, and humanities. The King's Doctoral College offers facilities and research training programs. Students will receive customized methodological training through the London Interdisciplinary Social Sciences Doctoral Training Centre (LISS DTP), complementing their research projects alongside peers from other departments and Global Institutes. The Russia Institute hosts specialized research seminars highlighting current scholarship, while students can also access seminars across other departments and institutes.
A Master's degree or, in exceptional circumstances only, a Bachelor's degree with 1st class or high 2:1 honours. Fluency in Russian language – either through formal language training, or time spent in Russia – is strongly recommended, and will be of benefit to the majority of applicants. If invited to interview, the appropriate level of fluency for your intended research project will be discussed and assessed. Students can demonstrate their English Language Proficiency with the following tests and grades: IELTS (Academic): 7.0 overall with a minimum of 6.5 in each skill; TOEFL iBT: 100 overall with a minimum of 25 in writing and 23 in each of the other skills.
