The Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures provides exceptional research opportunities and PhD supervision spanning all eras of Spanish, Portuguese, and Latin American studies, encompassing literature, history, cultural studies, film, theater, and music. King's College introduced Spanish instruction in 1831 and was the first British university to teach Portuguese in the 1860s. With the creation of the Cervantes Chair in 1916 and the Camoens Chair in 1919, King's has emerged as a global leader in Spanish and Portuguese studies. This legacy of academic excellence continues through our department's dedication to innovation and research. Our expertise covers Spain, Portugal, Brazil, Latin America, and Lusophone Africa, supported by faculty with diverse teaching and research specializations, enabling us to provide unmatched supervision options for postgraduate scholars. The department fosters a dynamic research community where postgraduate students actively participate.
