The IoPPN is globally recognized for its neuroimaging expertise. The Department of Neuroimaging operates within the Centre for Neuroimaging Sciences, a collaborative initiative between the IoPPN and South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM). This facility creates an interdisciplinary research hub that merges advanced structural, functional, and metabolic imaging technologies with specialized knowledge in diagnosing and treating neurological and psychiatric conditions. By 2018, the CNS will feature two dedicated research MRI scanners and a third shared for both research and clinical studies, all operating at 3T field strength alongside another in the nearby NIHR/Wellcome Trust King's Clinical Research Facility. These systems enable functional, spectroscopic, anatomical, and pathological mapping. Additionally, a 9.4T pre-clinical MRI system is located at the James Black Centre on the Denmark Hill Campus.
Ongoing research covers diverse areas including neurodegeneration, epilepsy, stroke, pain management, psychosis, mood disorders, developmental conditions, and typical brain function. Studies employ various neuroimaging methods such as perfusion, diffusion, and structural/functional imaging. Supporting these applications are parallel investigations in imaging physics and data analysis, while the PhD program fosters research in both image acquisition/analysis and applied projects.
