Modern terrorism has reached unprecedented levels of lethality in contemporary times. The spectrum ranges from far-right extremist shootings to bombings inspired by ISIS and violence fueled by conspiracy theories, constantly transforming to exploit new environments and technological advancements. Beyond its direct deadly consequences, this form of political violence carries profound implications. As evidenced by recent Middle Eastern developments, terrorist acts can instantly reshape geopolitical realities, spark fresh regional confrontations, and deepen global societal fractures. This Master's program, developed with insights from top terrorism experts and security professionals, explores this multifaceted and rapidly changing threat – examining its historical roots, underlying motivations, and domestic/international counterstrategies. Participants will study terrorist recruitment tactics, their exploitation of emerging technologies, and governmental approaches to threat mitigation. The curriculum intentionally adopts an interdisciplinary framework incorporating historical, political, international relations, and sociological perspectives. Practical training includes intelligence analysis techniques and open-source intelligence (OSINT) methodologies taught through specialist workshops with field practitioners. Standard requirements: A minimum 2:1 undergraduate Bachelor’s (honours) degree. If you have a lower degree classification, or a degree in an unrelated subject, your application may be considered if you can demonstrate significant relevant work experience, or offer a related graduate qualification (such as a Masters or PGDip).
Programme-Specific Requirements: Undergraduate degree with 2:1 honours in International Relations, War Studies, History, Political Science, Strategic Studies, Criminology, Economics, Geography, History, Law, Philosophy, Psychiatry, Psychology, Religious Studies, Social Anthropology, Sociology, Theology. Applications from students with first degree in other areas, including science, language, and journalism, are also welcome. Candidates who do not achieve a 2:1 but have relevant professional or voluntary experience will also be considered. Mature candidates will be considered favourably. In order to meet the academic entry requirements for this programme you should have a minimum 2:1 undergraduate degree. If you are still studying you should be achieving an average of at least 60% or above in the UK marking scheme. Students can demonstrate their English Language Proficiency with the following tests and grades: IELTS (Academic): 7.0 overall with a minimum of 6.5 in each skill; TOEFL iBT: 100 overall with a minimum of 25 in writing and 23 in each of the other skills.
