The Department of Geography boasts a dynamic academic community, with most faculty participating in one of six specialized research clusters: Contested Development, Earth Observation & Wildfire, Physical & Environmental Geography, Political Ecology, Biodiversity & Ecosystem Services, Risk, Hazard & Society, and Urban Futures. Our scholars extend their investigations beyond these groups through independent research and partnerships with external institutions. These collaborative teams work through faculty-led initiatives and doctoral research projects, driving our global recognition in key areas: urban cultural and sociopolitical transformations, municipal governance and policy, sustainable urban development, environmental challenges in developing regions, terrestrial ecosystem analysis, and environmental policy politics. Our distinctive research strengths also encompass historical geography, disability studies, architectural geography, rural development strategies, and environmental remote sensing technologies.
