The Bioengineering and Therapeutics Group is an interdisciplinary team affiliated with the University Hospital of North Staffordshire and RJAH Orthopaedic Hospital in Oswestry. Their primary focus lies in developing innovative technologies for cell and tissue engineering, as well as implementing cell-based therapies for regenerative medicine in clinical settings. Overview This collaborative research group brings together experts from various fields connected to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire and RJAH Orthopaedic Hospital, concentrating on breakthrough technologies in cellular engineering and the clinical application of regenerative treatments. Their specialized knowledge encompasses active clinical cell therapies, environmental chamber and bioreactor development, magnetic nanoparticle delivery systems, and the regulation of stem cell differentiation. Since 2009, the group has co-managed an EPSRC Doctoral Training Centre in Regenerative Medicine in partnership with Nottingham and Loughborough universities. The Institute has pioneered the UK's first MRC multicenter trial (ACTIVE) investigating cell therapy for connective tissues, supported by on-site GMP cell therapy facilities at both hospital locations. The team recently became a partner in the inaugural EPSRC Innovative Manufacturing Centre for Regenerative Medicine, fostering industry collaborations to commercialize cell therapies for patient care, while also participating in the EXPERTISSUES EU FP6 NOE initiative. The BT group maintains connections with diverse research fields including Respiratory Medicine, Pharmacy, Clinical Science, Imaging, and Neurology. Additionally, they have launched the HYANJI SP3 - People IRSES EU program, creating academic partnerships with China's Tsinghua and Chengdu Universities in pharmaceutical and biotechnology studies.
Due to UK visa requirements, international fee-paying students are generally limited to full-time enrollment unless pursuing distance learning programs.
