You'll benefit from cutting-edge facilities during a year of focused, discipline-specific preparation that builds the foundation needed for master's-level success. Upon completion, you'll seamlessly advance to our IBMS-accredited MSc Biomedical Science programs (Blood Science or Medical Microbiology).
Course overview
This Graduate Diploma offers crucial support for those with non-science backgrounds, lower-class science degrees, or those seeking to strengthen their English and academic skills before undertaking rigorous postgraduate work in biomedical science. Covering all facets of human health and disease, biomedical science represents one of the most expansive and vital fields in contemporary science and medicine - driving life-saving discoveries and innovative treatments.
The School of Life Sciences maintains national and international recognition for research and teaching excellence, with all programs accredited by either the Royal Society for Biology and/or IBMS. We collaborate closely with NHS Trust professionals and industry experts who help shape our curriculum, ensuring you gain employer-relevant skills while contributing valuable practical insights to our teaching.
After successfully completing the Graduate Diploma (achieving 50% or higher), you'll qualify for our IBMS-accredited MSc Biomedical Science program, specializing in either Blood Science or Medical Microbiology. These pathways incorporate professional expertise to explore clinical and research applications across biochemistry, immunology, hematology, and transfusion science.
Blood Sciences represents one of four core IBMS-recognized biomedical disciplines, alongside Infection Sciences, Cell Sciences, and Genetics and Molecular Pathology.
Career prospects
Biomedical scientists play pivotal roles in healthcare teams, delivering critical scientific data that guides patient care, disease investigation, and infection control. This Graduate Diploma prepares you for our two IBMS-accredited MSc pathways: Blood Science (focusing on diagnostic and clinical blood-based techniques) or Medical Microbiology (specializing in infectious disease prevention and treatment).
MSc graduates can pursue diverse biomedical careers including laboratory research, technical support, scientific writing, quality control, or healthcare sales - equipped with versatile skills for the evolving science sector.
