OverviewPetroleum engineering plays a vital role in the secure, productive, and environmentally responsible development of oil and gas resources to fulfill worldwide energy needs.Founded in 1975, Heriot-Watt University's GeoEnergy Engineering (IGE) program has offered its prestigious Petroleum Engineering MSc, equipping countless graduates with expertise to solve complex industry challenges worldwide. This program takes a multidisciplinary approach to petroleum resource discovery and recovery. The curriculum covers extensive applied petroleum engineering principles, producing technically competent graduates with comprehensive industry understanding - achieved through eight instructional courses and two projects. For the field development project, students analyze actual field data while addressing technical, economic, and environmental factors. The individual research project allows students to focus on specialized areas such as geosciences, improved oil recovery techniques, production chemistry, or advanced drilling methods, with topics available from both the Institute and industry partners.Program LengthOnline option: 2¬Ω - 8 yearsDistance learners typically dedicate 13 to 17 weekly study hours, enabling MSc completion within three to four years.
