A key focus of the Institute involves examining how poverty, deprivation, and social inclusion policies intersect with urban environments, especially neighborhoods, housing markets, and employment landscapes. Our research emphasizes the spatial aspects of poverty and disadvantage while advancing the concept of socially sustainable urban development and renewal.
This research strand builds upon the legacy of CRSIS (Centre for Research into Socially Inclusive Services), which since 2000 championed inclusive service delivery models. CRSIS sought to enhance understanding of service accessibility in disadvantaged communities amid economic and technological shifts, aligning with broader goals of social equity and urban revitalization.
CRSIS's investigations spanned specialized sectors like financial inclusion and retail services, alongside conventional municipal services. Later emphasis included youth education initiatives, while recent projects explore urban green spaces and environmental services - connecting to broader studies on sustainable city design. Emerging research also addresses health outcomes, alongside ongoing examinations of income inequality, housing affordability, and energy poverty.
