The MA (Hons) in Geography, Society and Environment is ideal if you're passionate about human geography and subjects like urban planning, social justice, sustainable urban development, and environmental sustainability. This program examines the dynamic relationship between individuals and their surroundings, investigating how communities influence and are influenced by their spatial contexts.Key questions explored include:How do urban transformations occur, and what role do residents play in shaping their communities?In what ways does our physical environment affect human actions and interactions?What factors contribute to certain locations being more prosperous, content, or adaptable?Through strong industry connections and interdisciplinary teaching methods, we provide practical, real-world learning experiences that mirror professional geography practice. You'll engage with guest speakers from various sectors who share contemporary solutions to pressing challenges.The curriculum addresses critical 21st-century issues including demographic shifts, social disparities, ecological solutions, and sustainable growth, while developing workplace competencies like GIS digital mapping and team collaboration.During your first two years, you'll study core subjects spanning human geography (covering social, economic, and urban aspects) and physical geography (including earth systems, water cycles, and landforms), alongside essential technical and fieldwork skills. Later years focus on urban studies, spatial analysis, and city development.
You'll gain practical abilities in data collection, cartography, and surveys while strengthening critical analysis and research capabilities. This interdisciplinary, industry-aligned program emphasizes solving authentic challenges, preparing you for collaborative professional environments. Graduates emerge as adaptable thinkers capable of applying their expertise across diverse career paths.
Year 1 Standard entry requirements - Highers AABB, A-Levels BBC – ABB, Int. Baccalaureate 29 points, BTEC DMM (in a relevant subject), HNC B in graded unit (in relevant HNC). Please check that you meet our University-wide National 5/GCSE (or equivalent) English and Maths requirements. Minimum entry requirements - Highers BBBC, A-Levels BBC – ABB. Year 2 - Advanced Highers BB plus Highers AABB, A-Levels ABB, Int. Baccalaureate 34 points, HNC A in graded unit (in a relevant subject area), HND BB in graded units (in a relevant subject area), BTEC DDM (in a relevant subject), Global College - Successful completion of our Engineering with Accelerator Programme. Year 3 - HND AB in graded units (in a relevant subject area). IELTS Academic 6.0 with no score lower than 5.5. TOEFL 79 (including reading 18, listening 17, speaking 20, and writing 21).
