Orthoptists are healthcare specialists focused on assessing and treating various eye disorders. Their expertise lies in comprehending ocular function and how the brain processes visual information. These professionals provide care for patients with vision development issues and conditions stemming from brain injuries, diabetes, strokes, visual impairment, and glaucoma. Orthoptists collaborate extensively with eye doctors, vision specialists, pediatricians, neurologists, early childhood educators, community health workers, hormone specialists, and other medical professionals in team-based treatment approaches. GCU's curriculum includes joint training with students from other healthcare disciplines, offering a comprehensive educational experience across all four years. This field appeals to those pursuing healthcare careers who thrive in patient interactions, especially with pediatric and geriatric populations.
Orthoptic studies offer intellectually stimulating coursework with outstanding career prospects. The degree holds global recognition and meets the standards set by the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC). Upon graduation, individuals qualify for HCPC registration and can join both national and international orthoptic associations, including the British and Irish Orthoptic Society along with global and European orthoptic organizations.
