The School of Modern Languages and Cultures offers an excellent environment for postgraduate research. Currently hosting more than 40 research students from the UK, Europe, and worldwide, our scholars pursue PhD and MA projects spanning translation, literature, theater, film, and photography. Students engage in diverse postgraduate initiatives such as dialogue sessions and academic seminars. We encourage applications for both PhD programs and research-based MA degrees.

Qualification Requirements
The standard minimum entry requirements for Postgraduate Research are an upper second class honours degree (2:1) from a UK university or an equivalent degree qualification from an overseas university. A Masters qualification is a requirement for entry on our PhD programme. Evidence of research skills and/or experience is useful. For international applicants whose first language isn’t English, we require a UKVI/IELTS score of 7 (with no component under 6.5). Applicants who have not reached this level, can be admitted to a 6-, 10- or 20-week pre-sessional English Language course, with the course length depending on your current UKVI/IELTS score (which must be over 6.0, with no component under 5.5). TOEFL iBT: 92 (no component under 23); 176 (minimum of 169 per component) in Cambridge Scale (CPE or CAE; Pearson Academic (PTE): 62 (with no less than 56 in each Communicative Skill).
