Our faculty specializes in diverse research areas spanning Medieval poetry, drama, mythology, and romance, along with English literature from the 18th and 19th centuries, American literature, 20th-century poetry and fiction, and critical theory. We particularly welcome applications focusing on: Classical Text Reception, Medieval Literature and culture, Renaissance Literature, Romantic-era poetry, fiction, political writings and aesthetic theories, Victorian and Edwardian literature, Postmodernism, literary interpretation, concepts of authorship, and 20th-century British, Irish, and American poetry and fiction. Each student will be paired with a primary supervisor and an Advisor to develop their research plan. Prospective applicants are welcome to consult with us about their interests beforehand. Regular meetings with supervisors will be required to review progress. In the first year (or second year for part-time students), a 5,000-word piece will be evaluated by a faculty member other than the supervisor to assess development. Students will work toward timely completion of their degree. An annual progress report, jointly prepared with supervisors, is due each July. Thesis examination will involve both internal and external evaluators. We actively support research students in attending conferences and presenting papers, with departmental funding available when possible.
