The Doctoral program welcomes applicants holding either a Bachelor's or Master's degree, provided they meet the required academic standards. This research-focused degree culminates in a thesis defense and, upon fulfilling university requirements, awards a PhD. Full-time candidates must dedicate between three to four years to complete this program. Earning a Doctorate serves as the primary qualification for academic appointments and numerous research roles across both educational institutions and corporate sectors. That said, some students pursue PhD studies purely out of intellectual curiosity, seeking to explore their passions within a scholarly setting under the mentorship of leading experts in their field. The program emphasizes guided independent research, with each student receiving support from at least two supervisors to develop an original, meaningful dissertation containing publishable content. Throughout the program, students benefit from comprehensive training in both general research methods and specialized subject knowledge, offered at departmental, faculty, and university levels. Regular progress evaluations ensure academic development. Our annual intake typically ranges from 15 to 25 new doctoral candidates.

Qualification Requirements

The standard minimum entry requirements for Postgraduate Research are an upper second class honours degree (2:1) from a UK university or an equivalent degree qualification from an overseas university. A Masters qualification is a requirement for entry on our PhD programme. Evidence of research skills and/or experience is useful. For international applicants whose first language isn’t English, we require a UKVI/IELTS score of 7 (with no component under 6.5). Applicants who have not reached this level, can be admitted to a 6-, 10- or 20-week pre-sessional English Language course, with the course length depending on your current UKVI/IELTS score (which must be over 6.0, with no component under 5.5). TOEFL iBT: 92 (no component under 23); 176 (minimum of 169 per component) in Cambridge Scale (CPE or CAE; Pearson Academic (PTE): 62 (with no less than 56 in each Communicative Skill).
