Enhance your understanding of the history curriculum and cultivate the abilities to motivate secondary students to explore the past and recognize its significance to modern times through the PGCE Secondary in History program.
From designing lesson plans to shaping the learning atmosphere, the PGCE Secondary History equips you to become a self-assured and creative beginning educator capable of sparking students' interest in historical events and their connection to today's world.

Combining academic study with hands-on experience and field trips to historical locations, this course familiarizes you with the breadth and depth of history as a subject for students aged 11-16. The program focuses on strengthening both your content expertise and teaching methods as you explore strategies for making history come alive in educational settings.

Upon successful completion, you'll earn a Postgraduate Certificate in Education from Durham University along with a recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status. The QTS component is accredited by Newcastle University and granted by the Department of Education.

Our program takes pride in delivering a carefully balanced combination of research and classroom practice to launch your teaching career. We consistently highlight your access to the Core Content Framework throughout the PGCE to thoroughly ready you for the Early Career Framework, which will guide you through your initial two years as a new teacher.

University-based sessions concentrate on weekly teaching themes, combined with subject-specific workshops led by university experts and school partners. The Professional Studies components deepen your grasp of essential educational concepts and classroom techniques, enabling you to contemplate your teaching philosophy and growth as an emerging educator.
