The Durham MSW Social Work program offers a rigorous curriculum grounded in research and hands-on learning. As a student, you'll develop the essential knowledge, abilities, and ethical principles that form the basis of social work practice across individual, group, and community levels.
This 21-month program consists of seven modules, blending academic instruction with a practical research project and two field placements totaling 170 days. You'll gain experience working with diverse populations, including mandatory training in statutory services for children/families or vulnerable adults, alongside opportunities in voluntary organizations focusing on areas like family law, housing insecurity, addiction, gender-based violence, sex work, community programs, and advocacy initiatives.
Service users, caregivers, and professional partners play a central role throughout the program. This collaborative approach, combined with exposure to various social work environments, prepares graduates to excel in any specialization within the field.
Our internationally recognized program delivers exceptional education rooted in research and practical application. You'll learn from distinguished faculty including scholars, researchers, and practicing professionals specializing in our five key research areas: Community Development & Social Equity, Health & Social Theory, Education & Social Disparities, Justice Systems & Social Inequities, and Violence Prevention. The program fosters dynamic discussions among students from diverse professional backgrounds.
