The MA in Translation Studies is a specialized program designed to equip students with professional translation skills across multiple languages and English, while exploring translation as an academic field with rich cultural and historical roots. This program trains graduates for careers as professional translators and intercultural mediators, or for further academic research in the field.
Language options available include Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish.
Built on contemporary theories and methodologies, the curriculum benefits from insights by working translators and research-focused faculty. It covers language studies, translation technology, linguistics, professional competencies, subtitling, ethics, project management, and intercultural communication, with additional interpreting training for Chinese.
Students can complete the program full-time in one year or part-time over two years, based at Durham's School of Modern Languages and Cultures.
The program provides access to advanced technical resources, including an interpreting suite for Chinese, eye-tracking devices, and key-stroke logging tools for research. Practical experience is available through work placements, and students can attend masterclasses led by industry professionals.
As a partner of the Chartered Institute of Linguists, the program includes CIoL-accredited translation assessments and offers students the chance to earn a CIoL qualification during their studies.
With an emphasis on successful intercultural exchange, the program takes pride in its graduates' contributions to enhancing global communication and understanding.
