The MA in Risk, Security and Politics investigates how risk and resilience concepts carry political weight, demonstrating how risk functions as a governing mechanism in societies worldwide. The program further analyzes uncertainty's role in shaping modern social structures.
This cross-disciplinary program suits students with backgrounds in social sciences or geography, while remaining approachable for arts and humanities graduates. It cultivates crucial analytical abilities for examining risk as a governance strategy addressing diverse global issues, from environmental crises and migration to international relations and security threats.
Students complete coursework over one year (full-time) or two years (part-time), covering risk comprehension, mitigation strategies, societal aspects of risk, and contemporary geospatial analysis techniques. The program culminates with either an academic thesis involving original research or a professional dissertation combining scholarly investigation with practical fieldwork.
Instruction comes from faculty in the Geography Department and Durham's Institute of Hazard, Risk and Resilience - leading researchers advancing risk-related theory and application. They deliver cutting-edge training in security studies, political analysis, and risk methodologies.
The curriculum offers customization through elective modules from the School of Government and International Affairs and Sociology Department.
