The MA in Environmental Humanities examines how humanities-based research can create meaningful impact and enhance our approach to the escalating worldwide environmental challenges.
This program integrates components from diverse fields such as Anthropology, English Studies, Geography, History, Modern Languages and Cultures, Philosophy, and Theology and Religion, equipping students with a solid foundation for advanced research or transformative work addressing environmental and climate concerns.
The curriculum focuses on two key modules. Environmental Humanities: Frameworks and Debates presents essential methodologies and investigates how arts and humanities can complement or question scientific and technological solutions. The second module, Climate and Energy: Intensive Study, provides a comprehensive look at contemporary climate science alongside the societal, political, and economic dimensions of energy consumption.
Students can tailor the rest of their studies to align with their interests. Options include an interdisciplinary dissertation and specialized modules covering subjects like environmental philosophy, environmental history methods, cross-cultural perspectives on nature, religious interpretations of living through crises, and even language study opportunities.
Our goal is to cultivate reflective, critically-minded individuals who can positively influence our rapidly evolving world. The program develops analytical, interpretive, and communication skills, fosters discussions about human flourishing models, and nurtures the ability to envision future possibilities.
