Our Master of Arts in Classics program blends language instruction with an examination of Greek and Latin philosophy, history, and culture, equipping you with the scholarly groundwork for a research-oriented career.
You can complete this program in one year as a full-time student or two years part-time, beginning with a language course of your selection. This core component is complemented by elective modules examining the philosophical works of Cicero and Aristotle, alongside broader studies of historical, literary, and intellectual traditions.
Instruction occurs through lectures, seminars, and intimate group discussions, with a strong focus on small-class teaching to foster thorough discourse and allow you to explore diverse viewpoints. Additionally, you'll undertake a substantial dissertation on a topic of personal interest, guided by faculty members who possess wide-ranging expertise within a department renowned internationally for its academic excellence.
This scholarly leadership has enabled us to establish specialized research hubs, including the Centre for Classical Reception, the Centre for the Study of the Ancient Mediterranean and the Near East, and the Durham Centre for Ancient and Medieval Philosophy.
Beyond learning from distinguished specialists in a vibrant academic environment, you'll enjoy exclusive access to our comprehensive library collection, housing approximately 8,000 volumes of classical texts in both original languages and translations—an invaluable resource for your research endeavors.
