This combined degree program enables you to pursue your passion for a modern European language and its cultural context while examining various historical eras and themes.
During your first year, you'll develop core language competencies in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. You'll also examine cultural elements through literature, film, art, history, and politics related to your chosen language. History studies will span both medieval/early modern and contemporary periods.
The second year builds on these foundations, allowing you to refine your language abilities while beginning to specialize in areas of particular interest. History modules at this level concentrate more on specific historical periods, notable events, or ongoing academic debates.
Your third year offers international experience through study abroad options, teaching placements, or work opportunities. This transformative period accelerates language proficiency while providing cultural immersion, new friendships, and alternative learning approaches. You may also opt to extend your program with an additional placement year.
Final year studies focus on advanced language acquisition, with potential specialization in translation or interpretation. Your historical studies will culminate in examining how historical narratives are constructed. You'll also undertake independent research through a dissertation, exploring either a historical subject or cultural topic of your choosing.
