Criminology examines criminal behavior and societal deviance through a social lens, investigating the relationship between crime and community structures. Key questions we explore include: what factors increase criminal tendencies in certain individuals, why specific groups face higher victimization risks, and what strategies effectively deter or manage criminal activity.
From a critical standpoint, we also analyze why particular behaviors become criminalized and what this reveals about power dynamics and social control mechanisms.
As a Criminology student, you'll become part of a vibrant academic environment featuring globally respected scholars who influence justice policies. Our program will push you to reconsider assumptions while deepening your analytical grasp of crime within its broader social and political frameworks. You'll examine criminal behavior theories, justice system operations, and specialized subjects like digital offenses, gendered violence, and the sex industry.
The curriculum includes hands-on research experience through projects in your second and final years. You can opt for practical experience through community placements or participate in Durham's acclaimed Inside Out program, which facilitates learning exchanges with local correctional facilities.
