Performance is a specialized pathway within our Music research programs (MPhil, PhD). This option is designed for Music graduates seeking to pursue advanced academic study while maintaining a strong practical musical focus. Our faculty covers diverse areas, with notable expertise in: Keyboard instruments, particularly piano, harpsichord, and organ. The PhD in Performance requires candidates to deliver a public recital or lecture-recital lasting about ninety minutes, accompanied by either a written thesis (40,000-50,000 words for PhD, 20,000-25,000 words for MPhil) or a scholarly edition with analytical commentary. Practice-based projects are evaluated using the same rigorous standards as traditional Cardiff University research degrees. Such submissions should demonstrate in-depth exploration of musical performance aspects rather than simply showcasing professional work. Here, research is defined as systematic inquiry generating novel understanding, communicated effectively.
