The School of Chemistry has established significant expertise in Chemical Biology, housing a specialized research team focused on this dynamic field. Students enrolled in the Chemistry (PhD/MPhil) program have the opportunity to pursue their research projects within this group. The Chemical Biology team, which is rapidly growing, leverages Cardiff's strong chemistry foundation to foster interdisciplinary collaboration across Physical, Medical, and Life Sciences. Active research areas encompass synthetic organic chemistry, carbohydrate and nucleic acid studies, protein chemistry, enzyme reaction mechanisms, biomolecular interactions, computational approaches to enzyme catalysis, chemical genetics, protein structure manipulation, immunology, and drug development. The group maintains robust partnerships with Schools including Biosciences, Pharmacy, Optometry, and Medicine. Financial backing comes from research councils, charitable organizations, and industrial partners, while cutting-edge facilities support synthesis, spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and molecular biology work. The interdisciplinary nature of the research welcomes students from various academic backgrounds—including Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Computational Sciences, and Molecular Biology—to meaningfully contribute to ongoing projects.
Full-time program durations: PhD 3 years, MPhil 1 year
