Recognized by the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ), our MA in News Journalism equips you with fundamental skills to discover, craft, and share compelling stories using contemporary tools and techniques.
This rigorous one-year program teaches you to:
Compose news articles and features
Develop multimedia content
Conduct thorough research
Establish professional networks, and
Manage an assigned news territory
Beyond writing, you'll master mobile photography, short video production, and data visualization for publication on our community news platform, The Cardiffian. The curriculum also covers effective social media strategies for story promotion.
The program emphasizes hands-on learning through field assignments that simulate real-world journalism scenarios. You'll create content for both digital and print formats, potentially covering diverse events like press briefings, council meetings, legal proceedings, political developments, sports matches, and cultural happenings.
While we don't expect polished journalists at entry, applicants should show genuine news enthusiasm and demonstrate commitment through relevant experience (paid or voluntary). Regular news consumption across various media indicates the engagement we value.
NCTJ-accredited and focused on UK media landscapes, this course covers British politics and English/Welsh legal frameworks. Though international applicants aiming for UK careers are welcome, those with global aspirations might consider our MA International Journalism program instead.
