The Legal Practice Course (LPC) provides rigorous postgraduate education for aspiring solicitors in England and Wales under the current framework. After finishing the LPC, candidates must complete a two-year training contract - a structured work-based learning period. This course equips students with essential skills, knowledge, and professional attitudes needed to begin their training contracts, handle practical legal challenges, and establish strong foundations for their solicitor careers through developing competent, confident, and professional working methods. The LLM Legal Practice Course variant additionally prepares students for research module completion while encouraging critical reflection on contemporary issues facing the legal sector.
Career opportunities - LPC graduates become eligible to commence training contracts/recognized training periods toward solicitor qualification. The qualification may also lead to alternative legal roles like paralegal positions, with potential to secure training contracts subsequently. Completing either a Research Project or Reflective Portfolio can enhance involvement in pro bono initiatives or strengthen independent research capabilities, improving practice readiness. Furthermore, both public and private sectors increasingly seek graduates who stand out from their peers by offering additional value to employers. The program teaches distinctive professional skills including advanced writing techniques, critical reasoning, audience engagement strategies, and understanding research impact - all giving graduates competitive advantages in the job market.
