Optometrists are eye care professionals who conduct comprehensive eye examinations, offer guidance on vision issues, and prescribe corrective eyewear like glasses and contact lenses. They're also trained to identify, treat, and monitor ocular conditions such as glaucoma, while recognizing eye-related symptoms of systemic diseases like diabetes.
This four-year master's program equips students with clinical expertise, theoretical understanding, and hands-on patient interaction essential for a successful optometry career. The curriculum covers diverse areas including comprehensive eye assessments, optical dispensing, contact lens adaptation, binocular vision issues, visual impairment, color vision deficiencies, and children's eye care. Students will develop the competence to independently handle various optical and ocular health concerns.
During the program, students undertake an extensive clinical placement arranged by the College of Optometrists, gaining real-world experience in optometric practice while assuming greater patient care responsibilities. The course also provides exclusive access to specialized eye clinics staffed by a multidisciplinary team, offering valuable opportunities to refine clinical techniques.
The program incorporates pathways to obtain advanced qualifications from the College of Optometrists, equipping graduates for evolving professional demands. It establishes a strong foundation for postgraduate specialization or research, while preparing students to meet ongoing professional development requirements and leadership challenges in contemporary UK optometry practice.
Graduates will complete a minimum of 48 weeks of clinical training, qualifying them for independent practice and registration as UK optometrists.
