What makes this course worth studyingFor centuries, humanity has relied on Earth's natural resources - metals, minerals, fossil fuels - to construct our communities, energize our homes, and manufacture the essential tools and technologies we use daily. As these resources become scarcer, specialized expertise and advanced technology are needed to locate and utilize them sustainably. Our Exploration Geology program reveals how Earth's geological processes form these vital resources and teaches methods for their responsible discovery to meet growing needs. You'll cultivate crucial abilities in data interpretation, decisive problem-solving, and hands-on fieldwork in diverse environments. Through specialized coursework and practical labs, you'll master mineral identification techniques and gain proficiency with industry-standard software and datasets. The curriculum introduces critical environmental, social, and governance considerations in resource exploration, with optional modules available in sustainability-focused areas like environmental geology and hazard mitigation. With over a century of experience educating mining professionals, Cardiff University offers the UK's sole undergraduate program specializing in resource exploration. Our extensive industry partnerships provide exceptional global internship opportunities with leading exploration companies.Enrolled students benefit from our exclusive Alumni Mentorship Program, a LinkedIn-based platform offering career guidance and professional networking with successful graduates.Teaching and evaluation methodsOur welcoming academic community provides instruction from internationally renowned researchers through a balanced combination of: theoretical lectures, hands-on laboratory sessions, field expeditions, small-group tutorials, interactive workshops, and seminar discussions.
