Our research-focused Biological Sciences program offers exceptional flexibility, enabling you to select modules from nearly every subject area within the School. You'll explore diverse biological disciplines such as: plant and animal biology, microbiology, genetics, systems biology, ecology, diseases, behavioral studies, neuroscience, zoology, developmental and stem cell biology, and evolutionary science. The Ecology and Conservation module includes subsidized field trips to locations like Wales for River Ecology, Tobago for Tropical Marine Ecology, and Malaysia for Rainforest Biodiversity. Your third year will involve a professional placement at a field center, zoological/botanical institute, museum, research lab, or other approved organization. This invaluable experience provides hands-on research exposure and significantly boosts both your academic credentials and career potential. While many placements are UK-based, recent years have seen students securing positions worldwide, including Southeast Asia, South Africa, Europe, Australia, Madagascar, and North America.
Career opportunities - Many BSc Biological Sciences graduates pursue PhD or master's programs, while others build successful careers in research, conservation, environmental management, scientific publishing, agro-industry, or wildlife management. The degree also develops transferable skills valued across various sectors including business, public service, and administration. Additionally, it serves as excellent preparation for professional training in medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, education, and other fields. In 2016/17, 93% of our graduates seeking employment secured positions or further study within six months. Students completing a Professional Training Year consistently demonstrate stronger employment prospects in their chosen fields.
