At the School of Modern Languages, we strive to shape you into a 'global citizen' equipped with critical thinking, cultural awareness, and versatile skills. Our 4-year BA Modern Languages program enhances your communication abilities, analytical skills, and personal resilience through immersive foreign language experiences.Students can select one or two languages from our seven offerings:ChineseFrenchGermanItalianJapanesePortugueseSpanishWe offer two program tracks: one for students with A-level proficiency (Upper Elementary) and another for beginners (Elementary).You'll examine your chosen languages through their social, political, historical, and cultural contexts using diverse learning materials and interactive methods to strengthen reading, writing, speaking, listening, and translation abilities.A key feature is the mandatory study abroad component, where you can either attend a partner university or undertake work placements in your target language countries.Upon graduation, you'll achieve fluency in one or two foreign languages, capable of eloquent speech and writing, while confidently analyzing complex texts in both the target language and English.Language study encompasses more than vocabulary and grammar - it's an exploration of culture and society. Our curriculum features engaging modules highlighting cultural diversity and promoting linguistic adaptability.Career opportunitiesWe're dedicated to equipping you with the skills and confidence to thrive in today's competitive job market, whether you have clear career goals or are still exploring options.Practical experience through placements significantly boosts employability and helps clarify future directions. Work placements form an essential part of our BA Modern Languages degree.We regularly offer On-Campus Internships during summer breaks, allowing students to contribute to educational innovation, professional services, and research projects.Our alumni succeed across various sectors including finance, international relations, consulting, education, media, politics, diplomacy, translation, law, and teaching.Many students cherish their overseas experience so much they pursue additional travel or seek international employment after graduation.UK-based graduates often enter postgraduate programs or begin careers immediately, securing positions in diplomacy, civil service, education, business, and journalism. Other career paths include translation, language instruction, export coordination, and editorial roles.
A level: ABB-BBC. If you have grade B in a language at A-level you will have access to the languages Upper Elementary pathway.
International Baccalaureate: 32-30 overall or 665-655 in 3 HL subjects. If you have grade 6 in a HL language you will have access to the languages Upper Elementary pathway.
Baccalaureate Wales: From September 2023, there will be a new qualification called the Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales (level 3). This qualification will replace the Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate (Welsh Baccalaureate). The qualification will continue to be accepted in lieu of one A-Level (at the grades listed above), excluding any specified subjects.
GCSE - Grade C or grade 4 in GCSE English Language. IELTS (academic) - At least 6.5 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each subskill. TOEFL iBT - At least 90 overall with a minimum of 17 for writing, 17 for listening, 18 for reading, and 20 for speaking.
